Future Focused: Your Six Year Journey
All LMaStudents get expert advice in planning for their future, for the next ‘leg’ of their six-year journey from GCSE celebration to degree graduation, apprenticeship completion or first significant promotion. Our approach is completely personalised: whether you've always known what you want to do or are still unsure about your next steps, we will support you to make informed decisions that align with your goals and dreams: we will ensure you leave LMaS with many and meaningful choices.
LMaStaff have extensive knowledge how to prepare students for the academic admissions tests required by the most competitive courses, programmes and universities. We’ll help you navigate the process, even if you’re the first in your family to attend university or follow a particular career pathway. We’ll support you if you’re eligible for Widening Participation programmes, such as UNIQ at Oxford, Access to Leeds and Sutton Trust Summer Schools.
Led by Mrs Brack ([email protected]), our careers programme is meticulously designed to meet the Gatsby Benchmarks, a set of eight guidelines that ensure high-quality careers education for students. These benchmarks cover everything, from providing LMaStudents with a solid understanding of different career paths to offering personal guidance and real-world experiences.
Our programme is largely delivered within tutorial sessions, where you’ll receive tailored support to help you plan your future. This includes:
- One-to-one guidance.
- Personal coaching, including: how to write a CV; interview techniques; mock interviews.
- Support with applications to degree level apprenticeships and to higher education via UCAS.
- Support following exam results, to help students decide what to do next.
- Workshops for LMaStudents and their parents and carers on key career issues (which could include weighing up the costs and benefits of various post-18 choices, such as higher education and its alternatives).
- Working in partnership with leading universities to widen participation in higher level education.
- Attending the annual ‘Future Focused Day’, when LMaStudents meet and engage with a wide range of representatives from universities, employers and apprenticeship providers, and thereby increase their knowledge of the many rewarding pathways ahead of them after they leave LMaS.
STAND UP AND STAND OUT
Developing your employability skills, such as leadership, team working, communication, project management and problem-solving, is essential if you are going to apply successfully for jobs, degree level apprenticeships and under- and post-graduate degree courses.
All of the programmes we organise, including Enrichment, the Leeds Mathematics Certificate, university partnership activities and careers-related events, and also how we design and teach our lessons, help you develop these skills. This is one of the ways we give you The Gift of Choice.
Work experience can be a valuable way to prepare yourself for the world of work. We encourage all LMaStudents to look for ways of broadening their experience of the workplace. We are continuing to develop connections with local and regional specialist businesses, thereby expanding the work experience opportunities for LMaStudents.
