OUTREACH & CPD

We are determined to closing existing, entrenched gaps in A-Level and Higher Education Mathematics and mathematical Science and STEM-related careers, in particular gaps in the

  • participation of female & female-identifying students;
  • attainment of students who are Widening-Participation eligible.

We are committed to bringing together students from these and other under-represented groups with like-minded peers: for these students in particular, ‘finding their tribe’ will be transformational for their aspiration, their attainment and their self-identity.

To ‘change the deal’ for these students, we have substantial, and expanding, Outreach and CPD programmes, in particular:

  • opportunities for secondary and primary students to enrich and deepen their mathematical enjoyment and understanding, so that they are more likely to attain highly and want to follow an ‘excellence pathway’;
  • support for teachers to identify and nurture and develop their students’ enthusiasm, aptitude and self-identification as mathematicians and scientists;
  • volunteering as part of the Tuesday Afternoon Enrichment programme, so that LMaStudents can go to secondary and primary schools in the city and region, perhaps the school they came from, and exemplify our core value of Impactful Altruism by working with and supporting younger learners, by giving back the time and encouragement they themselves had and which helped lead them to LMaS.

All schools in the GORSE Academies Trust are committed to inspiring children and young people to participate in the study of mathematics, irrespective of their background. LMaS’ partnership with the University of Leeds supports us to do so. The university’s breadth and depth of knowledge, experience and research in Widening Participation contributes significantly to our programmes.
