OUTREACH & CPD
We want every LMaS student to graduate successfully with a Mathematics or mathematical Science degree from a well-regarded university, or to complete a successful degree apprenticeship with a national or global employer, and then go on to achieve highly throughout a rewarding career. But we are also determined to close existing, entrenched gaps in the
- participation of female & female-identifying students; and the
- attainment of students who are Widening-Participation eligible.
We are determined to ‘change the deal’ for students who, at the moment, are currently under-represented in Mathematics and mathematical Sciences in Higher Education and in STEM-related careers. High-quality research supports our premise that bringing together students from these groups with like-minded peers can be transformational for their aspiration, their attainment and their self-identity.
To do so, we have substantial, and expanding, Outreach and CPD programmes. We provide engaging opportunities for secondary and primary students to enrich and deepen their mathematical understanding so that they are more likely to attain highly and to want to follow an “excellence pathway”; and we support their teachers to identify and nurture and develop their students’ enthusiasm, aptitude and self-identification as mathematicians and scientists.

All schools in the GORSE Academies Trust strive to inspire children and young people to participate in the study of mathematics, irrespective of their background. LMaS’ partnership with the University of Leeds supports us to do so. The university, with its rich tradition of research and its commitment to Widening Participation, contributes significantly to our programmes. University teaching staff and under- and postgraduate students bring their breadth and depth of knowledge and experience to our programmes.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH QUALITY, HIGH IMPACT OUTREACH PROGRAMMES IS INTEGRAL TO THE MISSION OF LEEDS MATHEMATICS SCHOOL.
