Productive Struggle
Embracing challenge
At LMaS, we believe that real learning happens not when you’re cruising through easy tasks, but when you’re tackling tasks that really make you think: tasks give you a ‘sweaty brain’! This is what we call productive struggle. Imagine it as the ‘sweet spot’ of learning, when you’re pushing your limits and grappling with tough problems. This isn’t just about understanding the material in front of you, it’s about building the mental muscles that will help you conquer complex A-Level questions and ensure you’re well-prepared to navigate challenges you’ll encounter after LMaS.
Your teachers are here to guide you. They carefully design tasks that gradually increase in difficulty, ensuring that you’re always thinking but are never overwhelmed. You won’t be completing repetitive exercises; instead, you’ll be working through questions and tasks that develop your understanding and stimulate you to think deeper and harder.
Why it matters
Productive struggle isn’t just something that happens naturally, it’s a crucial part of how we design your learning experience at LMaS. When you’re asked to work through difficult problems, you’re actively engaging with new ideas, making connections, and deepening your understanding. It’s through effort and perseverance, through getting stuck and getting unstuck, that the most powerful learning takes place
By regularly engaging in productive struggle, you’re not only preparing yourself to excel in your exams, but you’re also equipping yourself with the resilience and problem-solving skills that are invaluable in life. You’ll become happy that finding things difficult at first is normal and expected, and you’ll know that working through these difficulties is where true growth happens.
A supportive learning environment
In our classrooms, we have a culture where struggling with a problem is a positive and exciting part of learning. Your teacher won’t give away the answers too quickly, but they also won’t leave you to struggle alone for too long. Instead, they’ll offer the right level of support to keep you moving forward. Struggling is a normal and valuable part of learning. We want you to feel comfortable tackling difficult tasks, knowing that no-one is expected to answer questions immediately.
We nurture collaboration and mutual support between you and your peers: discussing tasks, sharing ideas, and challenging each other in a respectful way. Because everyone is committed to the principle of productive struggle, you’ll soon find that it becomes something you embrace and enjoy, something you look forward to.
So, the next time you’re faced with a new question or problem and you’re thinking “I don't know where to start”, remember that this is your opportunity to grow. Embrace the challenge, engage with the struggle, and know that your brain-sweaty effort is bringing you closer to achieving your academic, career and personal ambitions.
