Day In The Life Of...
Whilst students at LMaS will study A Level subjects, we are designing our teaching and learning approach to be different from a ‘traditional’ sixth form provision. We will provide an experience that blends a teaching experience that students will be familiar with from their secondary education, with a more ‘university style’ approach.
This approach will see our students accessing three distinct types of formal teaching:
- Large group lectures
- Traditional classroom teaching
- Smaller seminar groups
Alongside our A Level subjects, each student will also study the bespoke ‘Leeds Mathematics Certificate'. This activity will focus on individual and group projects and will support students in developing their skills in areas such as:
- research
- project management
- communication
- making presentations
- report writing
- team working
LMaS students will gain an insight into how mathematics is used in various sectors and become aware of the multitude of career opportunities for a highly numerate graduate.

There will be opportunities for LMaS students to link with representatives from industry, as well as interact with university students.
Whilst studying at LMaS, students will also have time dedicated to tutorial and assembly engagement. Within this time students will spend quality time with their individual progress tutors, as well as taking part in larger assemblies with their peers. As students’ progress into Year 13 the focus of this element of their study will transition from personal development to destination planning. We will encourage our students to begin preparing their progression plan from day one. A particular focus will be on admissions tests, such as the STEP papers, required for highly competitive courses.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
In today’s increasingly competitive world, it is not enough just to have qualifications; universities, apprenticeship providers and employers want you to have a range of other skills. Leadership, team working, communication, project management and problem-solving skills can also be developed through enrichment activities. They will make you a well-rounded applicant whichever pathway you decide upon.
It is important to develop hobbies and interests to combat the stress of exams, competing for university places, homework and assessments, as well as to meet new people and socialise!

Alongside academic study, LMaS will provide a specific enrichment programme for all students. The enrichment programme at LMaS enables students the opportunity to develop new interests, become more knowledgeable and skilled in an area, boost their self-confidence and benefit from doing something away from their main academic subjects.
Increasingly, employers and universities say they are looking for applicants with a wide range of employability skills; the CBI say that over 70% of employers want employability skills to be a top education priority. These so called “essential skills” such as leadership, team working, communication, project management and problem-solving can be developed through these extracurricular activities.
LMaS will provide an exceptional enrichment package for all our students. We believe that students should have plenty of opportunity to access a range of activities that will enrich a traditional academic curriculum. Each Wednesday afternoon, the timetable is dedicated to enrichment opportunities, for example:
- ‘Be active’ – sport and physical activity
- ‘Stand out’ – enhance your wider academic skills
- ‘Get involved’ - volunteering and social responsibility
- ‘Keep learning’ – try a new or different subject of learning
- ‘Explore’ – build or develop a new skill
As part of The GORSE Academies Trust, LMaS students will be able to access the wide range of sport and wellbeing activities that are offered to all our students. This can include the opportunity to participate in some of our ‘Big 3’ activities; rowing, volleyball and karate.
Wellbeing
The health and wellbeing of students is the primary concern of any school and at LMaS this will be a priority. Given the smaller scale of the school, we are well placed to know our students exceptionally well.
GUIDANCE TUTORIALS PROGAMME:
Our tutorial programme supports our students personal development and provides them with plentiful opportunities to prepare them to be successful and active members of their communities. This will cover a multitude of topics with examples including:
- Academic e.g. revision skills or study skills
- Careers e.g. UCAs admissions or interview techniques
- Personal skills e.g. personal finances or budgeting
- Health e.g. mindfulness, mental, physical and sexual health
PERSONAL TUTOR PROGRAMME:
All our students will be allocated a personal progress tutor, who will support them both academically and pastorally.
They will be the students first port of call and will work with students, and their parents/carers, to help them achieve academically and support them pastorally.
ENRICHMENT:
All our students will have the opportunity to take part in our enrichment programme. This is a key opportunity to be involved in activities that are outside of the students’ academic studies, providing a good balance to their time at LMaS.
SIGNPOSTING SUPPORT:
We understand that, at times, all of us may need to ask for support in our lives. We are committed to ensuring that help and support is available for all our students to access, be that internal to LMaS, through the wider GORSE Academies Trust or through external agencies.
Being part of a trust provides us with access to significant levels of experience and resource to support our students. We will draw upon the knowledge and skills of these partners, who already support over 1,400 post-16 students in Leeds.
