Your typical week
Lessons start every day at 09:30. Very high attendance and punctuality are essential for your academic and wider success. Many LMaStudents achieve 100% in both; the large majority achieve at least 97% in both.
In Year 12, you study four A level subjects. Maths and Further Maths are taught as one, you don’t have separate lessons in each subject; instead you have separate Pure Maths and Applied Maths lessons, with different teachers. In Chemistry and Physics, one lesson each week is given to the whole yeargroup as a lecture: this helps prepare you for how you will be taught at university.
You also follow two programmes that are unique to LMaS. You complete the Leeds Mathematics Certificate (LMC), an extended super-curricular research project, and you also have weekly Advanced Mathematical Problem-Solving (AMPS) lessons. In your AMPS lessons and your LMC project you explore mathematics and the mathematical sciences further and deeper than examinations ask you to. These experiences of ‘things to come’ will help you make informed and successful choices as you plan your academic journey after LMaS.
You also have, once a fortnight, a Topical Talk session. This is a programme we offer at LMaS in partnership with the Economist Educational Foundation. In each session we take an issue that is current and relevant and, drawing on news articles and other media, explore it in detail and in depth. In both Year 12 and Year 13 you have an assembly and a tutorial every week, and you take part in a Tuesday Afternoon Enrichment.

In Year 13, you don’t have LMC or AMPS lessons or Topical Talk sessions. Instead you have more independent Study Periods.
You don’t have to be at LMaS if you have a Study Period: you can work in a University of Leeds library or a Leeds city library or at home.
